Product Description
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet is a strict grain-free, lactose-free, and sucrose-free dietary regimen intended for those suffering from Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (both forms of IBD), celiac disease, IBS, cystic fibrosis, and autism. It is based on the work of Elaine Gottschall, who wrote Breaking the Vicious Cycle, which introduces the SCD and explains the importance of eliminating certain carbohydrates in order to alleviate digestive ailments such as IBD, IBS, and celiac disease. For those suffering from gastrointestinal illnesses, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) offers a method for easing symptoms and pain, and ultimately regaining health. Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet(TM) offers a diverse and delicious collection of 150 SCD-friendly recipes, that includes over 80 dairy-free recipes. The easy-to-make and culturally diverse recipes featured in the book include breakfast dishes, appetizers, main dishes, and desserts such as -- Hazelnut-Vanilla Pancakes, Olive Sandwich Bread, Chicken Satay, Roasted Bass with Parsley Butter, Thin Crust Pizza, Gretel's Gingerbread Cookies, and Mango Ice Cream. It is accompanied by 40 full-color photos that will inspire you to get cooking again. In addition, personal anecdotes accompany each section of this book. You can find out more about this book on-line at www.scdrecipe.com/cookbook/.

cookbook for real food December 21, 2008 i think of this book as the "recipes for the human diet". the dishes therein are not restricted instructions for specific dietary needs, but tips to make the food we should be eating even better. makes sense. agriculture is roughly 15,000 years old (we have been around for way longer), and most of what passes for edible these days is probably toxic; and if it's not then it does a pretty good impression at appearing to be so.
so, reader, have some real great tasting food (huevos rancheros - page 30, curry crackers - page 38, cobb salad - page 61, mango salsa - page 94, bok choy - page 97, moroccan beef - page 146) for a week, and then you tell me how you feel (happy!).
Overall good cookbook-- a couple recipes were not so great December 14, 2008 I have made a few recipes from this cookbook and overall I have been satisfied. I made the ginger tea and thought it was good -- recipe directions say to "add cinnamon"--but there is not cinnamon listed as an ingredient so you have to estimate.
I made the upside-down pineapple cake (p194) and it looked nothing like the picture and the taste was a little off.
Overall cookbook has good recipes. Some basics and some unique recipes.
Mouth watering recipes December 4, 2008 The recipies in this book are so divine! They sound so wonderful, my mouth waters! Beautiful full color photos & advice about certain ingredients depending on your stage of the diet. I would have given this book 5 stars if I could use it. I find that the recipes are far to advanced for my stage of the diet. I think it would be a year easy before being able to use this book. This is not a newbie book! If you are a newbie to the SCDiet, this is a book to keep in mind for when you are further along. If you are advanced in the diet, then by all means get a copy! Health through diet is a beautiful thing.
gem of a recipe book November 18, 2008 I have a growing number of friends who have to follow a restricted diet and this book really fills the gap in my collection of recipe books by putting together delicious recipes that are completely thought out from a nutritional perspective. I no longer feel that I have to compromise on taste to put together a dinner that we can all enjoy.
The book made me more conscious of what goes into what I cook and has changed my attitude to ingredients. Whether or not we have a gastric condition, we should all make an effort to eat food that is healthy and pure. This book addresses that simple goal superbly.
Recipes for the specific carbohydrate diet October 16, 2008 I found many interesting recipes in this book. So far every one that I have tried has been fantastic! I LOVE this book!
